APG-focussed FATF Standards Training Course, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 6-10 November 2023
An APG-focussed training course on the FATF standards was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 6 to 10 November 2023. The workshop was generously supported by Japan and hosted by Bank Negara Malaysia at the Lanai Kijang Training Institute in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The training was delivered by the FATF Training Institute and an expert from Jordan and supported by the APG Secretariat.
Funds from Japan sponsored five APG delegates, three experts from FATF TRAIN, one expert from Jordan and one APG Secretariat member. The Pacific AML/CFT Capacity Development Programme sponsored seven delegates from APG Pacific Island jurisdictions.
The five day course provided APG delegates from 24 jurisdictions with practical insights into key areas of the FATF Recommendations and Immediate Outcomes including:
- Risk and context;
- International cooperation;
- Risk-based supervision;
- Preventative measures;
- Financial intelligence and investigations;
- Counter-terrorism financing, including NPOs and implementation of targeted financial sanctions;
- Counter-proliferation financing; and
- Beneficial ownership.
The course included practical exercises reflecting common challenges faced by competent AML/CFT-related authorities. Delegates were actively engaged with the issues and exercises with good teamwork displayed across multi-disciplinary teams from various jurisdictions.
